Alternative Ways To Improve Your English: Shakespearean Insulter

“Do you set down your name in the scroll of youth, that are written down old with all the characters of age? Have you not a moist eye, a dry hand, a yellow cheek, a white beard, a decreasing leg, an increasing belly? Is not your voice broken, your wind short, your chin double, your wit single, and every part about you blasted with antiquity? And will you yet call yourself young?”

Sidi Faraz: (Spanish) Llorar en la noche

Pregunta:

Audio: (Arabic) Shaykh Muhammad Sa`id Ramadan al-Buti on Minority Fiqh

Shaykh Buti, one of the greatest living scholars and thinkers of Islam, gives a khutba on the issue of fiqh for minorities.

The text, in Arabic:
Minority Fiqh — The Latest Means for Messing Around with the Religion of Allah

A related article (in Arabic) by him:
Thought of the Month - On Minority Fiqh

As one of the righteous scholars of our times said, “The purpose of fiqh is to promote deen in the lives of Muslims. When fiqh does this, it is beneficial knowledge. Otherwise, it is closer to being a farce.”

Imam Shatibi stated in his Mawafaqat that the primary interests (masalih) that the Shariah came to promote are the interests of the next life. As for the interests of this worldly life, they are considered insofar as they promote the interests of the next life. When the interests of this worldly life conflict with the interests of the next life, the Shariah clearly gives precedence to the interests of the next life.

As Allah tells us in the Qur’an,

وَلَلْآخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ لَّكَ مِنَ الْأُولَى

“Verily, the next life is better for you than this life.” [Qur’an, 93.4]

And Allah alone gives success.

I feel that at times I don’t want them around - I don’t want to hear their music or hear them swearing. Please advice us what to do….”

Roots of Misunderstanding - “Bernard Lewis Revisited” by Michael Hirsh

“America’s misreading of the Arab world—and our current misadventure in Iraq—may have really begun in 1950. That was the year a young University of London historian named Bernard Lewis visited Turkey for the first time. Lewis, who is today an imposing, white-haired sage known as the “doyen of Middle Eastern studies” in America (as a New York Times reviewer once called him), was then on a sabbatical. Granted access to the Imperial Ottoman archives—the first Westerner allowed in—Lewis recalled that he felt “rather like a child turned loose in a toy shop, or like an intruder in Ali Baba’s cave.” But what Lewis saw happening outside his study window was just as exciting, he later wrote. There in Istanbul, in the heart of what once was a Muslim empire, a Western-style democracy was being born…”

Wired 12.11: The Decline of Brands

Sometimes, our attachment to particular manifestations of religious affiliation is rather like attachment to a particular brand: very comfortable, but also not very difficult to leave…

We see in the sunna of the Beloved of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that those who have “tasted the sweetness of faith” would find leaving what they hold to be true as difficult as disbelief…
