Sunni Sister: Blahg Blahg Blahg » Blog Archive » Priceless

Ask any Muslim you know what is the most valuable thing we have to give one an other as an Ummah, and insha’Allah, she or he will say “Sacred Knowledge.” Sacred Knowledge gives us the deeper meanings of the Qur’an. It aids us in our study of the Sunnah and the Sirah. Sacred Knowledge teaches us how to make wudhu and salat, and tells us why we need to choose one particular methodology and stick with it. Sacred Knowledge lets us in on the deeper meanings of dhikr, on the best way to eliminate the ego. Studying Sacred Knowledge with a qualified scholar gives us two gifts: the knowledge itself, as well as the fact that we’re recognizing and honoring chains of transmission that sometimes go back to the Prophet himself (aleyhi salatu wa salaam). All of this to say that Sacred Knowledge is the means that allows us to become better servants of Allah ta’ala and better implementers of the Sunnah of His Beloved (sallalahu aleyhi wa salaam).

So how much would you pay for such a gift?

copenhagen interpretation: a minor on tradition and modernity

The question of tradition and its place in this “modern world” is one that vexes a minor number of Muslims in a major way. Not only in the West. But it is here, in the West, that the battle seems to rage at its fiercest. Especially since each of us is taught to believe that all tradition is evil, backward, oppressive: that success lies in ditching the “dead weight” of tradition whether by means of Protestant reform, Marxist revision, or fundamentalist recreation. Merely coming to grips with tradition and applying it seems far too dull. It is as if staircases, built pretty much the same old way for ages, have become an object of undergraduate philosophical debate.

In iTunes War, France Has Met the Enemy. Perhaps It Is France. - New York Times

THE French take pride in their revolutions, which are
usually hard to miss — mass uprisings, heads rolling and such.
So, with the scent of tear gas in the air this past month from the
giant protests against a youth labor law, it was easy to overlook the
French National Assembly’s approval of a bill that would require Apple Computer to crack open the software codes of its iTunes music store and let the files work on players other than the iPod.
While seemingly minor, the move is actually rather startling and has
left many experts wondering (as ever): What has possessed the French?

Official Google Blog: Avoiding RSI

There is a Chinese saying that “To go beyond is as wrong as to fall short.” In other words, how long can you tap on that keyboard or sit in that chair before you hurt yourself. We’re not designed to remain as sedentary or perform the fine motor movements for the long uninterrupted hours that we have to do in so many of our jobs. Evidence suggests that prolonged abnormal posture and repetitive movements contribute to neck, limb and back pain. These conditions are collectively known as overuse syndromes, or repetitive stress injury (RSI).

Rumi on Heaven, Hell, and Allah

“Without You
even Heaven is Hell

If You are near
Then Hell becomes Heaven

O Beloved!”

Imam Busiri said:
With the praise of the Chosen One hearts come to life
And errors and sins are forgiven

I hope for success in life through him
And to meet him without burdens

A Prophet perfect in attributes whose
Beauty is complete and was thus named Beloved

His mention lifts hardships from us
If distress ever descends in our lives

His praise makes hearts increase in yearning
For him, as if they’re jewelry and perfume

I mention him when the night of distress descends
Upon me, and all difficulty is lifted from me

I have mentioned some of his noble traits
Yet I know not whether it is praise or falling well short

And when will I get to behold him with a light
Whose beauty will give contentment to a pining heart

Rolling Stone : The Worst President in History?

George W. Bush’s presidency appears headed for colossal historical disgrace. Barring a cataclysmic event on the order of the terrorist attacks of September 11th, after which the public might rally around the White House once again, there seems to be little the administration can do to avoid being ranked on the lowest tier of U.S. presidents. And that may be the best-case scenario. Many historians are now wondering whether Bush, in fact, will be remembered as the very worst president in all of American history.

MacGyver Tip: Exterminate with a lizard - Lifehacker

The San Diego Reader’s got advice for people with a bug
problem in their home who can’t afford extermination: get a
lizard to patrol the insides of your walls.

The gecko family of lizards, when not making insurance
commercials, spend their time eating bugs. Cockroaches are a particular
favorite, I’m told. When you get home, release the little guys
under the sink or anywhere else they can find their way into the walls.
The next sound you hear should be contented chomping.

MoorishGirl: The European Street - Mosques burned down in Spain

The Guardian reports that a Moroccan mosque in Ceuta was burned down, one of apparently several incidents of this nature on Spanish territory:

El
País newspaper yesterday listed a number of mosques and other
Muslim targets that have been ransacked, burned or had copies of the
Qur’an set alight by intruders.

Police said that extreme rightwingers and skinhead groups were responsible for almost all the attacks.

“They want Spain to have the same sort of violent reaction that the
Netherlands had after the murder of film director Theo van Gogh,” one
police expert told El País. “Little by little they are creating
an atmosphere for this to grow.”

Spain’s 800,000 Muslims, many of them immigrants from neighbouring Morocco, have some 600 mosques around the country.

If you think that violence against Moroccans or their institutions are
isolated occurrences in Europe, then you probably should make yourself watch this, courtesy of the Italian carabinieri.

The program will have a comprehensive schedule in which times for intensive study, tours, and worship are carefully integrated, for example, seerah-centric visits to various historical sites in the two holy cities. This provides students with the unique opportunity to experience the very places they are learning about in their classes.

Confirmed teachers are:
Shaykh Abdullah al-Kadi
Shaykh Hamza Yusuf
Imam Zaid Shakir
Ustadh Yahya Rhodus
Shaykh Abdullah bin Bayyah (tentative)
Shaykh Muhammad al-Yaqoubi (tentative)

The application process will be open to all eligible students until May 6th, 2006 , which is the deadline for application submission. Because of the high demand for the program, applications are reviewed on a first-come first-serve basis, so it is recommended to apply as soon as possible .

Visa for Cream

Historically, Britain relied on immigrants from India for factory help and other jobs that the British didn’t want to do. Immigration resulted in a British community of 2 million Indians, many who met with great success. But now the UK has tinkered with its immigration rules to reject poor workers from former colonies Bangladesh, Pakistan, India and elsewhere and target workers with information-technology and other science skills. A writer for “Outlook India” suggests that “Seen from the outside, India looks a lot more shining than it does to many within.” The Indian migration story now has a “cirucular” theme, she argues. Skilled Indians no longer merely set sights on the West for opportunity, but instead travel back and forth between the two countries to improve education, skills and careers in whichever location offering the most value and promise.

I know that Iblis will never enter Jannah, but I don’t clearly understand why because if everyone who has Imaan will enter Jannah eventually, didn’t Iblis worship Allah constantly for thousands of years? Freakonomics Blog » Don’t Tell Me Little Leaguers Are On Steroids, Too

Why else would the two stadiums in Williamsport, Pa., where the Little League Baseball World Series is played, be moving back their fences 20 feet?
Well, it turns out that Little Leaguers at this level are hitting more
home runs than doubles, which isn’t the way it works in the Bigs.
It’s funny: MLB’s idea of a
thrilling game is one with lots of home runs; LL’s idea is to
have more doubles and triples. Of course, none of this precludes the
possibility that Little Leaguers are cheating, whether by
chemicals or some other fashion. When I played Little League, a friend
of mine used to bash his aluminum bat against a brick wall to flatten
it out, which he swore gave him a bigger and better batting surface.
Truthfully, it was hard to tell: he struck out so often, I never saw
much of a difference.
